Mydrinking glasses have been taking a beating. I’ve been using a
non-phosphate based, powder detergent in the dishwasher, which
minimizes pollution when the water goes down the drain.
But over time, the glasses have gotten very cloudy. They’re still
free of germs and muck when they’re finished washing, but they’re so
cloudy, they look dirty even when they complete the entire dishwashing
cycle.

I tried rinsing them in vinegar, to no avail. Then it occurred to me to try…toothpaste. I use toothpaste to clean my jewelry; why not my drinking glasses?
* I dabbed an old toothbrush with my day-to-day toothpaste (you can probably use whatever you have around the house).* I wet the brush slightly then gently scrubbed the glass for about a minute.
* When the entire glass had been scrubbed, I rinsed it under moderately hot water.* Voila. A sparkling clean glass.
Now, I’m off to the store to find a no-phosphate gel dishwasher detergent. Let me know if you have any recommendations.
Sounds like it might also word for soap sum in showers. Guess I will have to try that one. Anyway – thanks for the great idea.
I use Diamond Brite dish detergent for the dishwasher, no phosphates and works great. Tub and Tile for soap scum and have never had anything that works so well, made with citrus and sugar cane.

Thanks for this tip. I suggest also rinsing it with hot water after scrubbing with a brush. It will ensure that all bacteria is dead.

I was skeptical at first but when I tried cleaning one of my drinking glasses it really did a good job. I have a small canteen beside my house and we have a lot of cloudy glasses sitting around. I will now buy extra toothpaste for my restaurant staff that’s responsible for cleaning the glass and plates.
My daughter needs to bring a few of our drinking glasses to school for their cooking class. She refused to bring one and told me that she will buy a new one because our drinking glass is very cloudy. I search the net for cleaning tips and I found your site. I tried it on one of our drinking glass and it looks like we just bought it. It’s crystal clear again!

You can find many commercial cleaners containing a very fine abrasive that are designed to make your chrome shine, but if you don’t happen to have one of these cleaners handy, try a little non-gel toothpaste instead it will work just as good.
